APS’ culture of innovation and continuous improvement guides development of new products

How American Power Systems stays ahead of the curve

July 25, 2023

At American Power Systems, we are committed to a culture of innovation and continuous improvement. So how do we stay ahead of the curve in a field that’s always evolving? By utilizing fundamental building blocks to develop the most reliable, durable products to keep you running:

1. We invest heavily in research and development to ensure that we are always using the latest technologies and techniques. Whether it's procuring customized parts to create prototypes, recruiting staff for specialized research and testing, or utilizing specific vehicles to effectively test on-board equipment, APS prioritizes having the knowledge, skills, components and platforms needed to innovate.

2. We value the feedback of our customers. Networking with current clients and suppliers helps us learn what they’re hearing in the field or being asked to do, even if it’s in the early stages. For example, in 2016 Polaris Defense approached APS for assistance with specialized electrical system requirements for its DAGOR® (Deployable Advanced Ground Off-Road) ultra-light tactical vehicle. Working together with Polaris, APS designed bracketry and a front-end accessory drive system capable of accepting an additional 28-volt alternator package. In addition, APS designed a custom high-idle controller to help the vehicle meet extreme power requirements while stationary for long periods. (Read the full case study here.)

3. We prioritize ongoing education and training for our staff to ensure they are always up to date on the latest trends and best practices. This ranges from participating in NTEA’s annual Commercial Vehicle Upfitting Summit (where APS engineering and R&D team members learn about manufacturer vehicle updates, critical upfitting issues, and changes to powertrains, electrical systems, chassis structures and other vehicle systems) to attending workshops offered through the Center for Industrial Research and Service (CIRAS), part of the national Manufacturing Extension Partnership dedicated to enhancing America’s small manufacturers’ growth.

4. We actively seek out partnerships with other leading organizations in our field to share knowledge and resources. These affiliations and memberships allow us to network with industry peers while learning the latest trends and legislative impacts impacting our industry. These include the Defense Automotive Technologies Consortium, National Advanced Mobility Consortium, NTEA: The Association for the Work Truck Industry and the Rock Island chapter of AUSA, among others.

By prioritizing our commitment to innovation, American Power Systems, Inc. can consistently push boundaries and find new solutions to meet your power needs. Contact us today to see how we can help!
